Once I’d had the idea of creating my own superhero universe, I impatiently looked forward to the day when the different characters would meet for the first time. One of my original ideas for the ending of my second book, Fire Angel: Turning Point was for Fire Angel and Fade to meet, but I soon realized it wasn’t the right time. Their meeting had to be part of a ‘big event’ and what better event to bring heroes together than a world-wide alien invasion?
As I brainstormed this big event, I soon realised that there was going to be too much going on to contain in a single book. It was then I knew that I was going to write a trilogy.
Some of my very early ideas for this came way back in 2014 when I was still trying to get my first novel, Fire Angel: Genesis published. Further ideas for the future also came to me while I was in the early stages of writing Fire Angel: Turning Point.
Then, inspired by a scene from ‘Green Lantern: Emerald Knights’, I developed the back story for one of my alien characters. From that point, the story of Scorched Earth began to take shape, I even had a couple of lines of dialogue set aside for the third book in the trilogy. I was further inspired by the movie ‘Independence Day’ starring Will Smith, which gave me more ideas for the opening chapters of the first book, Scorched Earth: Arrival.
Since this was to be a large scale threat, it couldn’t only be left to Fire Angel and Fade to handle. Others would have to step up. Enter Liberty Girl, a character who I had pre-planned to bring in at this point, and one for whom I have big plans going forward.
Then there was also the return of Project: Guardian, after their debut in my fourth novel, Fire Angel: Igniting the Spark. The team turned out to have a bigger role in Scorched Earth: Arrival than I had initially planned, now supported by a few more new characters, for whom I also have plans in the future of the Fire Angel Universe.
Finally, there was Jackie Blackman, who I introduced in my first book, Fire Angel: Genesis. She entered at almost the last minute, actually when I was only days away from sending the book in to be published! But she had to take her place and I rapidly introduced her in place of another character. I’d already had her back story worked out and upon reaching Scorched Earth: Arrival it was time to move onto the next part of her story.
As for the aliens…
And that brings us to where we are now. I’m currently hard at work on the second book of the trilogy, with more plans in the works post Scorched Earth.
